Chianti: discovering wine in Tuscany
by HTNCC - 11 January 2020Italy is rich in both grapes and wine, thanks also to the strong vocation of its territory for viticulture.
The Tuscany region has numerous wine-growing areas. One of the most famous is the Chianti wine region which is located between Florence and Siena, in a hilly landscape with unique characteristics. Numerous plantations of vineyards and olive trees create a very suggestive landscape. This territory has been producing wine since the time of the Etruscans and since 1800 it has obtained the Denomination of Controlled Origin – DOC.
The characteristic wine of the area is precisely Chianti, originally a table wine, served in the characteristic stuffed flasks, which has evolved over time, becoming internationally famous. Sangiovese is the main grape from which Chianti is made.
Another recognized wine is the famous Brunello di Montalcino, deriving from a small village of Etruscan origin in the province of Siena, with a production area of about 250 km between the Orcia, Asso and Ombrone rivers.
Also from Siena, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a white wine typical of a small town perched on top of a knoll. The term Vernaccia seems to derive from the Latin “vernaculus” with the meaning of “local, of the place”.
Montepulciano, a small village on the border with Umbria, boasts an important production of Sangiovese as well as Rosso and Vin Santo di Montepulciano.
