Bolgheri wine, on the Etruscan coast up to Maremma
by HTNCC - 21 April 2018Bolgheri is a town located on the Tuscan coast just to the south of Livorno. It is known mainly for deeply colored red wines, usually based on the Bordeaux grape varieties. The winemaking zone features sloping coastal vineyards close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The area had a little reputation for wine production, in contrast to the Tuscan vineyards in Chianti or further up in the hills. But is not!
Wine tourism in the area gained a considerable boost. The sunny, dry and breezy climate of Bolgheri and the stony soils with clay patches have attracted further vineyard expansion mostly focusing on red Bordeaux varieties.
A “Bolgheri Rosso”, “Rosso Superiore” may be made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, or a blend combining one or more of these, or up to 50 percent of Syrah or Sangiovese.
For example, in this area make Bolgheri DOC wine: Sassicaia, Ornellaia, Grattamacco, Piastraia…
Sassicaia’s name (“stony field”) alludes to the banks of gravel in the area, reminiscent of vineyards to plant Bordeaux varieties – particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
But the Bolgheri is also white wine, Sauvignon Blanc, and Trebbiano Toscano may contribute up to 40 percent. The white grape most often used in Bolgheri Bianco is “Vermentino”. The Bolgheri white wine examples are relatively light, crisp and refreshing, though there are some examples of barrel-matured whites.
In 2017 opening the “World Wine Town“, designed by Dante Ferretti and located in Casone Ugolino, once belonging to the Della Gherardesca family, which, scrupulously restored, a former 16th-Century farm in Castagneto Carducci in the heart of the DOC zone.
The “Musem” Sensory and Multimedia Museum of Wine presents itself as an unforgettable sensorial experience to be experienced at 360°. An emotional journey through history, from the Etruscans to the Romans, the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century, up to the present day, masterfully conducted by Professor Attilio Scienza.
As well as the MuSeM Sensory and Multimedia Wine Museum, the complex features restaurants, shops wine and cookery schools and conference facilities.
